Sandy delivers heavy blow to US economy

(AP) ? Superstorm Sandy packed a bigger economic punch than most people had thought.

In its sweep through the Northeast, the storm halted sales at major retailers at the start of the crucial holiday shopping season, closed factories and slowed home sales in one of the most densely populated areas of the country.

On Thursday, for example, Kohl's, Target and Macy's blamed the storm for weak sales in November. Macy's and Nordstrom Inc. reported their first monthly sales drop since late 2009, when the U.S. economy was just emerging from the Great Recession.

And the government said this week that new-home sales plunged 32 percent in the Northeast last month and nearly 12 percent in the South. By contrast, sales surged nearly 63 percent in the Midwest and nearly 9 percent in the West.

Sandy is being blamed for about $62 billion in damage and other losses in the U.S., most of it in New York and New Jersey. It's the second-costliest storm in U.S. history after Hurricane Katrina, which caused $128 billion in damage in inflation-adjusted dollars.

New York is seeking $42 billion in federal aid, including about $9 billion for projects to head off damage in future storms. New Jersey is seeking nearly $37 billion in aid, including $7.4 billion for future projects.

Still, reports this week showed that the economic damage was confined mainly to the Northeast. In other parts of the country, the economy picked up in early November, when many New Yorkers were still without power.

And next year, rebuilding efforts in the Northeast could help jump-start the broader U.S. economy. That's especially true if Congress and the White House reach a budget deal that prevents sharp tax increases and spending cuts from taking effect in January.

Homes must be rebuilt, cars need to be replaced and many people are likely to step up spending once the storm's impact starts to fade. All that would help accelerate growth.

The U.S. economy grew at a moderate 2.7 percent annual rate from July through September, the government said Thursday. Weaker growth is predicted for the October-December quarter.

Sandy shut down businesses from North Carolina to Maine and cut off power to 8 million homes in 10 states. Many people could not go to work and weren't paid for weeks.

Applications for unemployment benefits rose to an 18-month high in the first week of November, driven by a surge in applications in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

Such applications have fallen sharply since. But the increase earlier this month will likely depress job growth for November. Many economists predict that net job growth for November will range between 25,000 and 75,000 ? well below the 171,000 jobs added in October.

A Federal Reserve survey released Wednesday said economic activity in October and early November slowed from the previous six-week period in three of its banking districts covering territory from Philadelphia to Maine. That contrasted with the Fed's nine other banking districts, which all reported improvement in growth.

"The storm caused bottlenecks in the production process," said Joel Prakken, senior economist at Macroeconomic Advisers. "If you don't have electric power and transportation, you can't do a lot of things."

The lingering damage from the storm is weighing on the economy at a time of great uncertainty caused by the approaching "fiscal cliff." That's the name for automatic tax increases and spending cuts that will take effect without a federal budget agreement.

Most economists predict economic growth will slow to an annual rate below 2 percent in the October-December quarter. And some say the rate will likely be closer to a meager 1 percent. Prakken said the storm could end up lowering the growth rate by a half percentage point.

But by next year, Prakken said cleanup and rebuilding will start to add to U.S. economic growth.

Many analysts say the region is poised to rebound quickly. Economists at the New York Federal Reserve Bank said Thursday that they expect the economy in the New York region to be back on track by early 2013. Recovery in hard-hit New York communities like Long Beach and the Rockaways will take longer, though.

In the first three months of 2013, the economy's growth could rebound to a rate of 2.5 percent, said Nigel Gault, chief U.S. economist for IHS Global Insight. Gault predicts a 0.4 percentage point boost from the rebuilding and other factors related to Sandy.

"We think that growth will improve as we go through 2013, but that is contingent on us not messing things up by going over the fiscal cliff," Gault said.

Ouya dev consoles shipping to backers on December 28th, SDK available same day

Developer kits for the Ouya were given a ship date of December 28th today, alongside news that the system's software development kit ("ODK") will be available that same day. In case it wasn't already clear how small the Android-powered console is, the folks at Ouya included the picture you see above to further illustrate that point -- the thing is really small. Ouya expects the dev kits to get into backers' hands "within a couple days" of the 28th. Final units are still intended to ship some time in March 2013, though no final date is available just yet.

How different are these dev units from the final run, though? Not that different, we'd guess, considering the company's continued promise that "every Ouya will be a dev console." The only hint given of their difference is a note in today's update calling them, "pretty special." Beyond just getting a jump on game development with the Ouya in mind, dev unit buyers will also be the first to try out Jelly Bean gaming. Of course, if you're a dev unit-level backer and you'd like to share your thoughts with us, we're all ears.

The US seeks expanded military ties with Indonesia | West Papua ...

November 29, 2012 ? 10:40 am

A senior U.S. official says Washington should expand its military ties with Indonesia, befitting a relationship between two robust democracies.

Top diplomat for East Asia, Kurt Campbell, said those ties have grown in recent years, but not fast enough.

Campbell was speaking Tuesday (27/11) at a gathering of the U.S.-Indonesia Society in Washington.

The U.S. severed military ties for several years after of Indonesia?s bloody crackdown in East Timor in 1999. Jakarta has since sought to professionalize and modernize its military. Key U.S. restrictions on engagement with Indonesia?s feared special forces were lifted in 2010.

Human rights groups say Indonesia?s military abuse continues, particularly in the restive province of west Papua.

Campbell also advocated deeper ties between the two governments and praised Jakarta?s leadership in regional diplomacy.

GOP scoffs at White House?s ?fiscal cliff? opening bid

Republican House Speaker John Boehner speaks at a Capitol Hill press conference on Thursday. (J. Scott Applewh??Bolstered by his reelection, President Barack Obama on Thursday made a detailed opening bid to Congressional Republicans for averting the so-called fiscal cliff -- the mix of tax hikes and deep spending cuts that risk plunging the economy into a new recession come 2013. Republicans flatly rejected the offer, which mostly repackaged Obama's previous budget and jobs-creation plans while looking to avoid future fights over raising the country's debt limit.

Obama's proposal, delivered by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to Republican House Speaker John Boehner, called for $1.6 trillion in new tax revenues over 10 years plus some $400 billion in savings in popular entitlement programs including Medicare, the government health care plan for seniors. It also included some relief for Americans hit by the home foreclosure crisis and an extension of both the payroll tax holiday and unemployment assistance.

The package also includes a roughly $50 billion jobs plan, mostly infrastructure spending.

The White House is using the blueprint to address the thorny issue of hiking the federal debt limit.

Right now, Congressional approval is required before the federal debt ceiling can be raised. Opposition to boosting the debt limit by many Republican lawmakers in 2011 brought the U.S. government close to default.?Still smarting from that debacle, the White House wants to give lawmakers the right to block a debt increase rather than vote to approve it.

The offer landed with a thud on Capitol Hill, where Republicans bluntly rejected it and expressed shock that the president would essentially stick to the plan he trumpeted starting in September 2011 and all through the campaign. It includes tax increases on the richest Americans, something Republicans have publicly refused to approve.

"I remain hopeful that productive conversations can be had in the days ahead, but the White House has to get serious," Boehner told reporters. "This is not a game. Jobs are on the line. The American economy is on the line. And this is a moment for adult leadership."

"No substantive progress has been made in the talks between the White House and the House over the last two weeks," Boehner charged.

In response, the White House redoubled its assault on Republicans for refusing to raise taxes on income above $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for families.

"Right now, the only thing preventing us from reaching a deal that averts the fiscal cliff and avoids a tax hike on 98 percent of Americans is the refusal of Congressional Republicans to ask the very wealthiest individuals to pay higher tax rates," spokesman Josh Earnest said.?"It's time for Republicans in Washington to join the chorus of other voices - from the business community to middle class Americans across the country - who support a balanced approach that asks more from the wealthiest Americans."

In a sign of the political gamesmanship at work, Republican aides ? not the White House -- disclosed the offer even as they panned it. And the early response from White House aides was to point to Obama's victory over Mitt Romney to suggest that Americans will side with the president over his political foes.

Despite Boehner's blunt words, there have been signs on both sides that a compromise could be worked out. Some Republicans have publicly said they will support raising tax revenues, a party taboo, while the White House signaled that Obama would not insist that the wealthiest Americans pay the same tax rates they faced under Bill Clinton.

Tmac turns ball over then ex NBA player Sundiata Gaines hits game winning 3 in China

David Astramskas November 28, 2012

Actors and athletes make a lot of money by making?embarrassing?commercials and film/tv appearances in other?countries, China in particular, and in the contract it always states that the product can not be shown in the US.

That was all good before YouTube but now we can see every silly soda commercial A-list actors make. ?Same goes for popular American athletes that are playing overseas. ? The games might not be on ABC but the recaps will be online and I?m pretty sure Tmac doesn?t want you to see his turnover with the game on the line that allowed former NBA player Sundiata Gaines to hit a game winning 3 pointer. But that?s on YouTube just like this commercial for Xuejin beer (alcohol sponsored by the NBA?).

Olfactory Overload Causes White Smell

60-Second Science

Combining a wide variety of odors gives rise to a nondescript scent, just as combining colors of many wavelengths generates white light. Karen Hopkin reports

More 60-Second Science

Your morning coffee. A baking pie. That turkey in the oven. There are some smells you just can?t get enough of. But mix them and other scents all together and you get, well, nothing much.

According to a new study, a mash-up of 20 or 30 different odors gives you something entirely nondescript: almost a non-smell, if you will. The finding appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. [Tali Weiss et al, Perceptual convergence of multi-component mixtures in olfaction implies an olfactory white]

If you?ve ever taken physics, you might remember that combining colors of many different wavelengths generates light that?s white. And blending sounds of many different frequencies produces white noise.

Well, researchers got to wondering whether there?s an equivalent phenomenon for olfaction: call it ?white smell.? So they whipped up various combinations of 80 distinct chemicals and had volunteers take a whiff. When the olfactory ingredient list topped 30, one cocktail smelled pretty much the same as any other, even when the mixtures didn?t have a single ingredient in common.

The scent was not unpleasant. A professional perfumer called it ?aromatic,? which is like saying that the light was, well, light. So enjoy the smells of the holiday season. But try not to sniff too many at once.

?Karen Hopkin

What You Need to Know About the Lightbulb Law

Back in early 2007, Congress was working on the Energy Independence and Security Act to address the problem of inefficient lightbulbs. When word got out that they planned to ban incandescents, forcing everyone to buy expensive compact fluorescent lights (CFLs)?those flickering bulbs that look like pig's tails?people were outraged. Many resorted to hoarding, buying up as many incandescent bulbs as possible before they were gone for good.

There was one problem: The government never banned incandescents. The new law was enacted to simply phase out inefficient lightbulbs in, as Congress stated, "a technology-neutral way." The new law doesn't ban incandescent lightbulbs, nor does it demand the use of CFLs or any other kind of bulb. It simply sets forth energy efficiency targets that go into effect in two phases: first in 2012, and again in 2020.

By the end of this year, household bulbs?be they incandescents, CFLs, LEDs, or halogens?must use 30 percent less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs. (The law was originally supposed to go into effect at the beginning of 2012, but Congress delayed it.) And while incandescents are not explicitly banned, the older, non-energy-efficient style is going to have an awfully hard time reaching that target.

The problem with an incandescent bulb (besides the fact that it's 134-year-old technology) is that it converts only 5 to 10 percent of the electricity it consumes into light. The rest is given off as heat. That's great if you're using an Easy-Bake Oven or trying to keep your crested gecko warm, but it's a terribly inefficient way to illuminate a room.

Consider that a typical 60-watt incandescent bulb emits about 900 lumens of light, which comes to approximately 15 lumens per watt of electricity. The new standard requires bulbs to produce at least 20 lumens of light per watt; by 2020 that number rises to 45 lumens per watt. A current CFL will do 50 lumens per watt or more, according to the National Resources Defense Council.

These changes in the law are going to demand that we change the way we think about lightbulbs. We're accustomed to a lightbulb being a minor expense, but the upfront cost of an energy-efficient one is much higher. Some might cost $30 or more per bulb.

The important thing is that you'll save money in the long run, through greatly extended bulb life and dramatically lower electricity usage. So don't get psyched out by the higher upfront cost?you'll make it back (and then some) over time. And prices are expected to drop as technology improves and the new bulbs become more popular.

Most energy-efficient bulbs come in various types, including standard A-style, and chandelier and candelabra sizes. Some kinds are dimmable, and some LEDs can be adjusted to emit various colors. And it's important to note that you should recycle burned-out bulbs rather than toss them into the trash.

CFLs represent the best value for consumers, as they use one-fourth the power of a comparable incandescent lightbulb and last up to 10 times longer. As a result, each CFL will save the consumer at least $30 in the form of lower electricity costs over the life of the bulb.

LED bulbs are a rapidly emerging substitute for incandescents. These can last up to 25 years and are at least 75 percent more efficient than current incandescent bulbs. And while these bulbs cost more at the moment than CFLs and high-efficiency incandescents (approximately $10 to $30 per bulb), their price is expected to drop quickly as technology improves and the supply and use of the bulbs increase.

Still, some consumers might prefer to stick with products with which they are most familiar, or they might favor the warm color of an incandescent. And that's fine, because you don't have to buy a CFL?the new law doesn't specify what technology people must use to meet the new standards. There are improved incandescents on the market today; they just won't save you as much money as CFLs will in the end.

Professional Reflections: A Service Delivery Issue I feel Strongly About

An issue I feel strongly about is using scores from standardized tests to determine (assess) an individual?s speech and language abilities. I learned about what validity and reliability mean in reference to using standardized testing tools early in my educational course work for this field. What is bothersome to me is that while it is common knowledge that most if not all exams, especially those for children, are not ?normed? on children I would test, many agencies and supervisors demand a score as part of an evaluation report.

Children I would test are those that live in New York City and the New York region (i.e., Long Island, Yonkers, Westchester). Further exasperating this topic are those children which are exposed to more than one language. These children do not follow the ?typical? speech and language developmental norms of any monolingual community. Therefore, why are SLPs using these testing tools to make an assessment? Some may think the SLP is monolingual and may not be aware. Let?s make it clear, there is no SLP that should graduate from any program, bilingual or not, that is not aware of reading a testing manual at the least. We are also taught, even if briefly, that testing tools should be scanned to remove or adjust bias questions/materials and that bilingual children should be tested by bilingual SLPs. Let me make another point clear: while a person is bilingual it does not qualify them to assess a bilingual person. For example, I am proficiently bilingual in English and Spanish. ??

What is especially worrisome is that while this is such a touchy subject, a certified SLP can actually lose their license over this issue/topic (using a score to report findings). I would venture and guess that one or two malefactions would not substantiate a license being revoked, however it baffles me as to how not more of an emphasis is made on using appropriate testing materials and informed clinical opinions to report findings instead of using scores from a test. In New York City there are rarely any children that would meet the reliability, validity, and norming standards for any test that I know of, yet I find that too often they are used to assess the child?s language abilities.

Catherine J. Crowley is not only the director of the Bilingual Institute at Teachers College, Columbia University but she is an advocate for this issue. In reality, I cannot say she is an advocate she is the leader who identifies what issues need to change and how to go about changing them. Last year when I started at the institute she informed us of some upcoming trainings and reforms regarding this precise topic: agencies forcing their employees to use scores to report a disorder/delay. Cate, as she likes to be addressed by her students, is still conducting trainings around the city to various agencies and changing policies as we speak. She has a lot of support, some of which is through her students and staff. Cate posts information on the institution?s Facebook page such as rallies, petitions, current events, etc. This is a person that I would reach out to about this issue and support for continuing to proctor this change.?

Walk, Bike, Swim Your Way to Better Hearing | Hearing Aid News ...

In this world of confusing and conflicting information it is sometimes difficult to know what is good for us, and what isnt. The latest hot diet or a popular herbal supplement might be touted as the miracle cure-all, only to be dispelled later when new scientific data unearths the harmful side effects.

With all the fads that are thrown at us, how do we separate fact from hype? How can we know what is truly beneficial for our health, and what is outright dangerous?

One way to debunk the myths beyond relying on common sense ? is to look at the validity and longevity of various claims. Ask yourself: has a particular claim been verified and endorsed by the mainstream medical and scientific community; does it withstand the test of time; or is it just a flash in the pan?

While many so-called facts will fall by the wayside, one steadfastly remains: a link between regular cardiovascular workout and improved hearing. Simply put, maintaining healthy blood vessels and heart through exercise can benefit your ears.

Be Fit, Hear Better

Past and current studies conducted at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio show a direct relation between cardiovascular (CV) fitness and better hearing.

Though hearing acuity and, ultimately, hearing thresholds, are not entirely under our control, changes in certain aspects of physiological health have been shown to impact hearing sensitivity, says Kathleen Hutchinson PhD, Chair and Professor of the universitys Speech Pathology and Audiology Department. Namely, cardiovascular health has been shown to have a synergistic relationship to a persons hearing. We have proven in prior studies that cardiovascular health is linked to hearing thresholds.

Dr. Hutchinson is referring to the research study she and her colleagues, Helaine Alessio, Ph.D., of the Department of Kinesiology and Health, and Rachel Baiduc, B.S., Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, conducted at Miami University several years ago.

At that time, we found striking consistency whereby persons with low CV fitness, regardless of age, always had worse hearing compared to age-matched individuals with moderate or high CV fitness, Dr. Hutchinson says. Cardiovascular health and fitness seems to be an important mediator of hearing sensitivity.

New Studies, Same Findings

The team is taking the research further, expanding on the knowledge already gained through its previous studies. For example, another variable, otoacoustic emissions ? sounds produced by healthy ears in response to acoustic stimulation have been added to the tests.

By investigating otoacoustic emissions, a way to evaluate the integrity of the cells in the nerve of hearing, we are provided with another lens to examine the relationship between CV fitness and hearing, Dr. Hutchinson explains. The nerve involved in hearing has the very important job of collecting sound gathered by the outer and middle ear and preparing it for transmission to the brain.

For this study, subjects underwent a battery of hearing tests, including otoscopic examination (observation into the subjects ear to ensure that occlusions interfering with the testing process, such as wax build-up, were not present), pure tone hearing thresholds (subjects would indicate when tones of various loudness and pitch were heard to determine a threshold), tympanometry (a measure of ear drum mobility), and others.

Preliminary analysis of the data, Dr. Hutchinson says, reveals a link between hearing and a high cardiovascular fitness level. Though these results clearly produce clinical significance for persons with hearing loss, they are also relevant to all listeners, she says. By maintaining a high level of cardiovascular fitness, even in older age, individuals can help to preserve their delicate hearing system. It is highly recommended that unfit individuals begin even a moderate-intensity workout regime if there is history of hearing loss in the family. Cardiovascular fitness levels do decrease in most people with age, regardless of sedentary or active lifestyles. However, by keeping as fit as possible, one not only lessens the chance of health concerns related to being unfit, but also increases the chance of sustaining normal hearing thresholds even into old age.

The Heart Knows

The fact that the heart muscle needs regular conditioning is nothing new. Doctors have been telling us for years that exercise makes us more resistant to stress, heart attack, and a slew of other health complications.

For optimum results, the American Heart Association advises doing 30 to 60 minutes of aerobic exercise at least three or four times each week. Unfortunately, studies show that 60 percent of American adults don?t get the recommended amount of physical activity, and a quarter of all adults are not active at all.

But too often the word exercise gets a bad rap, because many of us think of it in conjunction with feeling the burn, that unpleasant sensation of tears and pulls all over our bodies.

Relax; there is no need to huff, puff, sweat, or suffer because moderate exercise, if done regularly, is just as effective as the high-impact kind, and far less harsh on the joints. Such enjoyable and fun activities as walking, hiking, biking, and swimming are an excellent cardiovascular workout, doctors say, and dont require expensive equipment or gym membership.

As the studies clearly indicate, the key to a better hearing and a good overall health is, literally, just an easy step or lap away.

Remember: stay fit. Your heart and ears ? will thank you for it.

Egypt's stock market tumbles after Morsi's decree

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's benchmark stock index on Sunday plunged by more than 9.5 percent in the first trading session since the country's Islamist president issued decrees to assume sweeping new powers, while police in central Cairo fired tear gas at protesters who accuse the Egyptian leader of a blatant power grab.

President Mohammed Morsi edicts, which were announced on Thursday, place him above oversight of any kind, including that of the courts. The move has thrown Egypt's already troubled transition to democracy into further turmoil, sparking angry protests across the country to demand the decrees be immediately rescinded.

The judiciary, which was the main target of Morsi's edicts, has pushed back. Judges and prosecutors stayed away from several courts in Cairo and the southern cities of Assiut and Luxor to protest the presidential decrees.

With the opening bell of the country's stock market on Sunday, the first day of the workweek in Egypt, the turmoil spread from the country's bitter politics to its already ailing economy. The Egyptian Exchange's EGX30 index dropped 9.59 percentage points, making the losses among the biggest since the turbulent days and weeks immediately after the ouster in a popular uprising of authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak last year.

Morsi, who narrowly won the presidency in June, says his measures were designed to "protect the revolution," but they triggered an uproar among non-Islamist political groups now vowing to press on with street protests to force him to back down.

Prominent Egyptian democracy advocate Mohammed ElBaradei warned Saturday of increasing turmoil that could potentially lead to the military stepping in unless Morsi rescinds his new powers, as the country's long fragmented opposition sought to unite and rally new protests.

Egypt's liberal and secular forces ? long divided, weakened and uncertain amid the rise of Islamist parties to power ? are seeking to rally themselves in response to the decrees.

On Sunday, protesters clashed with police in Cairo's Tahrir square, birthplace of the uprising that toppled Mubarak, and in the side streets and avenues leading off the plaza. The Interior Ministry, which is in charge of the police, said a total of 267 protesters have been arrested and 164 policemen injured since the protest began a week ago, initially to mark the anniversary of street protests a year ago against the nation's then-military rulers. Forty-two protesters were killed in those demonstrations.

The ministry did not say how many of protesters were injured in the latest clashes, but they are thought to be in the dozens.

Several dozen protesters are staging a sit-in in Tahrir, vowing not to leave before Morsi rescinds his decrees. The two sides have called for rival massive protests on Tuesday at two Cairo locations less than a mile apart, raising the possibility of renewed clashes between supporters and opponents of Morsi.

In the latest sign of the unrest sweeping the country, suspected militants blew up a military installation under construction in the central Sinai Peninsula area of al-Qaseema early Sunday, wounding three workers, according to security officials speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

It was the second blast to target a military building in Sinai in as many days. On Saturday, another border guard structure under construction was blown up in Rafah, close to the Israeli border.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility in either attack, but authorities have been battling al-Qaida-inspired militants in Sinai who have stepped up attacks against Egyptian security forces, and even on occasion staged cross-border raids targeting Israelis.

Gadgets worth buying ? even if they're not on sale

14 hrs.

Black Friday's over, but the shopping frenzy continues. Even so, there are some?gadgets that never seem to end up on discount table. These are?the best products of the moment, and you can?buy them ? even if they're not on sale ? without feeling an ounce of regret.

We've selected these gadgets (and gift-worthy?premium?services) through our own?firsthand experience, along with insight from fellow technology reporters and other tech-savvy colleagues.?Most are options that make sense in any circumstance, but a few recommendations?are better suited for certain people (for instance, Android fans, T-Mobile customers, etc.). The goal is for you to have a "safe" list: These are indisputably the best tech options of the moment for your loved ones ? or yourself.?

Apple iPhone 5
The iPhone 5 is the best smartphone choice on the market right now. (And good thing too, because?if you favor iOS, it's really your only option.) It's ridiculously slender and light, but makes no compromises when it comes to performance and battery life.

Samsung Galaxy S III
Those who prefer Android should feel comfortable snagging a Galaxy S III. While the phone would have been even better if Samsung hadn't slapped so many embellishments?on top of the pure?Android OS,?it's a solid device with a large, bright screen and a snappy processor.

Google?Nexus 4?by LG
You can find the Samsung Galaxy S III on all U.S. carriers, but the?impressive Nexus 4 only runs on T-Mobile and AT&T in this country. Google's newest?smartphone has the latest, purest version of Android, 4.2 Jelly Bean, with features like Photo Sphere panoramic shooting and wireless display video streaming.?And since it's Google's own baby,?it's bound to be first in line for the next Android?operating system upgrade, too.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite
NBC News' Wilson Rothman declared the Kindle Paperwhite "the new king of e-readers" when he reviewed it.?It has great contrast that comes as a result of an innovative integrated lighting system. You still get the easy-on-the-eyes readability and impressively long battery life, but no more need for an Itty Bitty Book Light. ($119 for Wi-Fi-only model, $179 with Wi-Fi and 3G.)

Apple iPad (4th generation)
Though the iPad Mini has received most of the attention this season, we're not recommending it for now?because ? as lovely as the new size and shape is ? the screen should have higher resolution. We are recommending the newest iPad, however: It?maintains all the clever design touches and excellent battery life?of the prior generation, but runs even faster. Pricing starts at $499.

Google?Nexus 7?by Asus
The Nexus 7 is a lightweight,?high-performance tablet that delivers a pure Android experience to people who prefer that platform. While we don't feel that there are enough tablet-specific Android?apps to make any of those devices viable competitors to the iPad, this 7-inch tablet, starting at $199, is a best-in-class vehicle for Web, email and all of?Google's own services.?

Amazon Kindle Fire HD
For $199, the Kindle Fire HD makes a lot of sense for?media consumption,?especially if you're already in love with Amazon and its $70-per-year Prime media service. (Just don't?expect to be editing photos and?working on spreadsheets on this, like you can on an iPad.)?The 7-inch?tablet's a decent improvement on its predecessor, and the all-new?8.9-inch version is a solid step up for just $299.

Apple 13-inch MacBook Air
Choosing a laptop can seem difficult, but for most people, an ultra-light device with speedy guts is the way to go. Unless you're someone who does incredibly processor-intensive work ? or desperately needs a DVD drive ? the 13-inch MacBook Air, starting at $1,199, is the best bet. (Why else would so many PC makers try to copy it?)

AirPort Express
The router provided by your Internet service provider is typically a pain in the rump to deal with. If you're finally ready to accept that it's time to look elsewhere, then Apple's $99?AirPort Express is the router you should pick up. It's ridiculously simple to set up and you won't have to think about it much after the day you unbox it.

Spotify subscription
You want music. And you want lots of it. Instead of purchasing songs a la carte or forking money over for every album you download, you should sign up for a premium Spotify subscription for $9.99/month. You'll have access to millions and millions of tracks, instantly, and even be able to store them locally on your mobile device or computer for off-line play.

Amazon Prime subscription
Purchasing movie or TV show downloads quickly leads to a long credit card statement, but with a $70-per-year Amazon Prime subscription, you'll have access to a huge library of streaming video. On top of that, you'll also get free shipping on most items. If you own a Kindle, Prime also gives you "free"?book borrowing, including bestsellers like the Harry Potter series.

Netflix subscription
If you're not prone to shopping on Amazon and couldn't care less about getting free shipping with your video streaming service, then the $7.99-per-month?Netflix is the choice for you. Besides, its movie library is more impressive than Amazon's, at least for now.

Canon PowerShot S110
Canon's S-series cameras have gained a reputation for being the best point-and-shoot devices on the market. If you're not content with the photos your phone spits out and want the kind of manual control usually reserved for DSLRs, then the latest PowerShot S110 (between $400 and $450 retail) is?ideal. (And?if you can live without the S110's touchscreen and the built-in Wi-Fi, you can find the otherwise identical PowerShot?S100 on sale now.)

Canon EOS Rebel T4i
Canon's T4i represented a big jump ahead for the affordable?Rebel series of DSLRs. Its new processor ?delivers speed and low-light performance previously seen only in pro cameras, and its?HD video shooting is the best in its price range (it's around $800 retail). Unless you have a bunch of Nikon lenses, there's really no reason not to pick up one of these.

Nikon D600
Speaking of Nikon, the D600 is just right?for dedicated amateur photographers who want a full-frame DSLR but don't want to pay through the nose (the camera plus 24-85mm lens retails for around $2,500). It has all the features you'd want from a higher-end DSLR and a nifty viewfinder which offers 100 percent coverage (unlike many cheaper models).

Panasonic Lumix TS4
While you take most of your pictures with your phone, you get nervous taking it out at the beach or at the pool. One grain of sand or drop of water, and it's "bye?bye, smartphone." That's where the TS4 comes in. Whether you're way into extreme sports or just have kids, a rugged camera like this?is a great thing to have on hand. (Retail price between $200 and $250.)

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Microsoft's Greater China VP says Windows Phone 7.8 to launch in the 'coming weeks'

Microsoft's Greater China VP says Windows Phone 78 to launch in the 'coming weeks'

Sure, Microsoft has already delivered its new Windows Phone 8 OS to the masses, but the WP7.8 release details, on the other hand, have been extremely minimal since we learned about the upgrade earlier this year. Well, according to Microsoft's Greater China Vice President, Windows Phone 7.8 will be hitting the Chinese market in the coming weeks, adding that there's an honest belief both numerical versions (maybe more?) of Redmond's mobile OS could easily live alongside each other in this country. Still, in the "coming weeks" could mean anything, although rumors around the web suggest the 7.8 version could make its official debut as early as next month -- which goes perfectly on par with previous whispers of an eventual launch by the end of 2012. We'll have to wait and see.

Obama Thanksgiving address: Calls to unite behind WH, doesn?t thank God

During his fourth Thanksgiving presidential address, President Barack Obama referenced the recent, long and bruising campaign season, urged the country to unite behind his administration and, for the fourth year running, neglected to offer verbal thanks to God.

?As a nation, we?ve just emerged from a campaign season that was passionate, noisy, and vital to our democracy,? Obama said. ?But it also required us to make choices ?? and sometimes those choices led us to focus on what sets us apart instead of what ties us together; on what candidate we support instead of what country we belong to.?

?Thanksgiving,? he continued, ?is a chance to put it all in perspective ?? to remember that, despite our differences, we are, and always will be, Americans first and foremost.?

The president?s call to unite behind his administration follows a bitter election, in which his opponent, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, won independents 50 to 45 percent, and whites 59 to 39 percent.

At the same time, while Democrats made gains in both the House and the Senate, the GOP held control of Congress. Speaker of the House John Boehner has since indicated that he is willing to work with the president, especially regarding the Jan. 1, 2013 fiscal cliff, when a combination of draconian spending cuts and massive tax hikes will hit the sluggish U.S. economy.

Additionally, for the fourth year in a row, the president did not explicitly thank God, raising the ire of conservatives.?

?Today we give thanks for blessings that are all too rare in this world,? Obama said. ?The ability to spend time with the ones we love; to say what we want; to worship as we please; to know that there are brave men and women defending our freedom around the globe; and to look our children in the eye and tell them that, here in America, no dream is too big if they?re willing to work for it.?

The president?s mention of the freedom ?to worship as we please? could be seen as a challenge to conservatives and the Catholic Church, both of which have accused his administration of waging a war on religious freedom. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops ? an organization that has often angered conservative Catholics for its left-wing rhetoric ? held a week of Masses, culminating in a Wednesday afternoon, July 4 Mass at the National Basilica, where 5,000 Catholics overflowed the 3,500-seat basilica.

American schools teach that the Pilgrims, who held the first Thanksgiving, fled to America from England to flee religious persecution.

Catholics, however, do not vote as a coherent bloc.

God did make an appearance, however, in the president?s 2012 Thanksgiving proclamation.

?Let us spend this day by lifting up those we love, mindful of the grace bestowed upon us by God and by all who have made our lives richer with their presence,? the proclamation reads.

In his address, the president also made mention of God when speaking of the victims and first responders in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

?When our brothers and sisters are in need, we roll up our sleeves and get to work ?? not for the recognition or the reward, but because it?s the right thing to do,? Obama said, repeating an oft-cited campaign trail line, often used to promote a tax hike. ?Because there but for the grace of God go I. And because here in America, we rise or fall together, as one nation and one people.?

The mention of God comes just over two months after the Democratic National Convention narrowly voted to not strike God?s name from the party?s platform.

The official proclamation is lower-profile than the address, and the neglect to verbally thank God ? as the original celebrators of Thanksgiving convened to do ? angered some conservatives.

?Yet again, President Obama?s Thanksgiving message eschewed any direct reference to thanking God, making this the fourth straight year in which the president of the United States has ignored the central message of the holiday in favor of political grandstanding,? the conservative Big Government reported. ?This year, Obama?s central message was that now that he?s been re-elected, Americans should agree with all of his policies. His unity routine sounds strangely empty after a campaign in which he focused on dividing Americans.?

?Obama?s lack of overt religiosity has been a source of controversy,? the pro-life LifeSiteNews reported, ?with polls consistently showing that a large number of Americans are unaware that Obama is a Christian, or doubt the claim.?

The president has a long history of upsetting the religious right, and even some in his own party. Incidents include having a cross removed from the allegedly Catholic Georgetown University while he delivered a speech there; infrequent church attendance; an overtly pro-abortion presidential campaign and open support for gay marriage.

But conservatives aren?t the only people the president upset on Thanksgiving. Soon, he may hear from animal rights activists.??(RELATED:?Butterball no longer halal)

?Peace, one of two turkeys pardoned by President Obama last year, was euthanized Monday, according to an official who insisted the timing of the death ? days before the Thanksgiving holiday ? was not suspicious,? CNN reports.

Is that alcohol you smell? Here's what to do - Business Management ...

Do you know how to react when you suspect an employee has been drinking?? When you smell alcohol on an employee, or receive reports that an employee smells of alcohol, you need to act fast to protect everyone?s safety?but not so fast that you mishandle the situation. Follow these guidelines:

Watch for observable behaviors that are consistent with cognitive impairment. These include slurred speech, unsteadiness on their feet, making an unusual number of mistakes or an inability to focus on their job duties.? ?We advise managers that we do not take employment action based on what we think we smell; however, this may be a clue,? says L.D. Anderson, HR manager for a national retail chain based in Texas. ?

Share your observations with the employee. ?We encourage the manager to ask the employee if they are all right, then state the behaviors which have been observed, and ask if there?s a reason for this,? Anderson says. The employee should be given a chance to explain.

Never make a medical diagnosis. ?Managers are coached to never directly?accuse an employee of being drunk or high,? says Anderson. Only doctors can make a diagnosis.

Reiterate the company?s substance abuse policy. Anderson instructs managers ?to present the employee with a copy of the company substance abuse policy and state that they?re not assuming or accusing the employee of being intoxicated, but want to be sure the employee clearly understands the policy.? ?

Make a judgment call. Assess whether a safety risk exists and the employee needs to be removed from the job.? When in doubt, get a second opinion and get HR involved immediately.

Document the conversation. ?Whether the employee?is returned to duty or not, the manager documents the conversation as a verbal warning,? Anderson says.

Did you know?

If an employee tries to hind behind the Americans with Disabilities Act, remember that the law does not preclude you from holding a current or recovering alcoholic employee to the same behavior standards as other employees, including working under the influence.

Practice Roleplay - Holy|Orders & Modesty

The following is a practice roleplay with the goal of mentoring Holy|Orders into expanding descriptions, word count and learning words for explaining battle maneuvers.

"As long as mankind shall continue to bestow more liberal applause on their
destroyers than on their benefactors, the thirst of military glory will ever be
the vice of exalted characters.
~Edward Gibbon"

It was a quotation against war; a simple game that marred man?s history for generations and generations. The books of the past, however, told naught but that history was destined to repeat; any peace was Carthagian peace, and war was just at an intermural. Scholars and youth demonstrated through the years that man kind would be destroyed by their own hand, and that technology was damning them. War still raged, and technology still advanced? centuries, millennia passed. Blood stained the lands and hands of soldiers, but still the world went on. The demonstrators died and were replaced, but none could predicted how war would effect the future.

Man separated; some fled, some fought. They divided themselves into rebellions, and pledges to either side, but they were naught but fickle pawns in the games of war. One nation swore oath to the silver moon above, the other nation to the golden sun. Each side swore to deity and man alike that they were the better, more righteous. Neither side would back down, both led by arrogance and pride. It seemed that total obliteration of all and everything was all that would stop the war. And in full knowledge of this, still the war raged on.

Rain. It was the first in weeks. The ground was hard, dry and cracked? the water wasn?t being absorbed. The thunderstorm had broken in the early morning and already the world beneath the clouds was flooding. Thunder boomed over head, cracking as the Gods protested the war; or was it the war itself? It was impossible to tell. Lightening struck the dead sticks near by; it had once been a forest but now only charcoal and ash remained. The flashes played eerie shadows across the darkened world, and silhouettes danced at the edge of his visions.

Nathaniel took refuge beneath the front porch of a dilapidated old church. Once the building had been an architectural masterpiece; there was still shards of a plaque announcing that it was a preserved piece of ancient history. It was only rubble now. The majority of the roof had caved, and the steeple lay in pieces to the side. Still, the front pillars held enough shelter over a few dozen steps to keep him clear of the rain.
